The West Town Gamadiam (the traditional type of grocery store in Taiwan): Grandma Chao’s Store

It is a great honor to meet Grandma Zhao before she left us.

When I was in year one, the broadcast in school would play the song “Tomorrow will be a better day” before the class started. At that time, primary school students’ allowance was around five to ten dollars. If there were someone had 20 dollars, he/she would be taken as a rich person. In the age, there was always an “evil” and tempting place called Gamadian, the traditional type of grocery store in Taiwan that attracted students on their way home after school.

Gamadian was a place that students were obsessed, which induced students to spend all the money in their pocket even though they only had one or two dollars left.

Pinballs and milk caps were the daily social materials and chemical candy strip and pigmented fish flakes were our snacks. Two dollars for gambling the lucky draw and gumball machine was an advanced entertainment. There were even silkworms available that connected to our science class. There were all kinds of things in an amazing Gamadain. Kids always begged their grandparents for more pockets money and could not get rid of the habits going to the grocery store.

The Gamadian in past days was not just a tempting store for children. It was also the gossip center in the neighborhood. The elderly men would meet friends at the park to play Chinese chess after getting drinks and cigarette from Gamadian, and moms would have chitchat over the asshole at home after getting grocery. People come and go, and many things take place here, sad or happy. Every single one was accepted here and got some consolation.

However, as the first 7-11 opened up 27 years ago, the Gamadian has been gradually replaced with the more convenient way of shopping. The Gamadian had become a memory of the good old days.

But, you might be surprised that at the cross of Liangzhou Street and Dalong Street in Datong district, there is still a tiny grocery store running by Grandma Zhao Yu-Lan.

Even though kids not coming, fewer toys, and time changed, Grandma Zhao still runs this grocery store in this era. She opens the store every day, stays under the low roof, sorting changes, tidying up, and dozing off. Thanks to her, this tiny Gamadian seems to freeze at the time what we cannot get back to.

The 82-year-old Grandma Zhao said that she had been running this store since she was 18. She said she was happy to have this store that connected her with her neighbors and had a great time with them.

Grandma Zhao passed away a month ago.

Not surprisingly, this Gamadian will be gone with Grandma Zhao. Her children will close the store sooner or later. They said the only reason why kept the store open for few customers before was for their mother having something to do.

That night, I left the grocery store that without Grandma, carrying the coke on my way home. What her children said still in my ears, however, what comes to my mind is that satisfied and dazzling expression of Grandma Zhao when she talked about her grocery store in our last talk.

It is a great honor to meet Grandma Zhao before she left us.

#Get a can of coke before it closes
